Little Red and Ryding Hood

The year is 1773. In the Appalachian Mountains of Colonial America a small red wolf is born. He is the runt of the litter. With the help of his grandmother he learns to make his way. He is Little Red.

The French and Indian War has just ended. A British officer, Lieutenant Colonel Hood, stays to make a life for his family in this new untamed land. He is lame and has no son. He teaches his young daughter to hunt. She is Ryding Hood.

“A Colonial Era adaptation of an ancient tale” Little Red Riding Hood is re-told with it’s traditional characters in juxtaposition. In this work children will see the wolf in a new light and learn that people can evolve. The story is accompanied by supplemental educational material expounding both its historical and natural context.

This is a collaborative project with artist Yvonne Gilbert and designer Danny Nanos. Both have a unique gift for tapping into the essence of a work and bringing it to life in amazing ways. Working with them is truly a joy. Here are some preliminary illustrations and design elements...
